This loop trail begins in Bonassola, a quiet village in La Spezia province. The route, with no major challenges, leads to the panoramic summit of Monte Rossola and returns through three small, typical Ligurian hill hamlets.
It's best hiked in winter when trails are quieter and temperatures are cooler.

Travel to Bonassola by train if possible. If driving, exit at Deiva Marina and continue about 20 kilometers to the seafront, where parking is available (free at certain times of the year).

Walk east along the beach for a few meters, then head into the village via Via Colombo. When you reach the Town Hall, turn right onto the Sentiero Liguria Sentiero liguria.

The trail, marked with CAI signs Segnavia CAI, climbs between houses to reach Poggio on the provincial road. Follow the road right for a few meters, then the trail markers direct you left onto a steep concrete staircase. Cross the paved road again and continue uphill to Scernio.
Here, wooden signs point left toward Monte Rossola, your destination.

Descend on a concrete path surrounded by olive trees with stunning sea views 665. The trail levels out on dirt, passing the remains of an ancient spring where Emperor Otto III is said to have rested on his way to Rome for his 996 coronation as Holy Roman Emperor.

At the junction with an information panel, turn right and climb to reach the state road in a few minutes. Cross it and follow the sign into the forest.

The trail now ascends steeply on rocky ground, with some stepped sections, through low Mediterranean scrub offering panoramic coastal views. From Levanto and Bonassola, you can see as far as Genoa and beyond.

As you climb, vegetation thins, revealing rock outcrops leading to the ridge toward the summit cross. After about 1 hour and 30 minutes, you reach the top of Monte Rossola (563 m), greeted by a breathtaking panorama of the Ligurian Alps and the rugged coastline.

For the descent, head north toward Passo Colletto, 665, initially through a small woodland, then on a flatter path through low vegetation, passing Rocca Gaibana before reaching Passo Colletto.

Leave the main trail and descend left into the forest toward Bonassola, reaching a wide, level dirt road. Follow it right to its end at State Road 332.

The route continues on the road, which is lightly trafficked. Follow the trail markers Segnavia CAI, turning right onto SP 45, passing a Levanto red marble quarry, known for its reddish stone.

After the quarry, leave the provincial road and descend left on a concrete road through fields 663 before entering the picturesque village of San Giorgio, with its colorful houses and stone porticoes.

Continue downhill to a drivable road, cross it, and follow the path toward the church of San Giorgio, whose bell tower is visible.

Pass the charming church nestled in vegetation, then descend to quickly reach the road leading left to Costella, another small hamlet worth a brief visit, before continuing along the road.

After a couple of bends, spot a concrete staircase on the right descending into the woods, allowing a shortcut to the descent to Serra, the third village, small and welcoming like the others.

With a final downhill stretch, arrive near the Castle of Bonassola, a 16th-century defensive fortress.
From here, a short descent leads into the historic center, completing the loop.

Bonassola, livelier in summer, still offers a few open places even in the off-season.
