This loop trail starts in Chignero, a hamlet 5 km from the Rapallo motorway exit. It's best tackled on clear mornings to fully appreciate the stunning views.
The final section before the summit is rated EE (for expert hikers) due to rocky passages with chains. Use caution and wear proper hiking shoes.
To reach Chignero, drive towards San Pietro di Novella, keeping left at the fork. Continue straight past Sant'Andrea di Foggia until the road ends near the church, where some free parking spots are available. Alternatively, check the bus schedule as services are limited, especially on Sundays.
To the left of the church, take the private asphalt road, then quickly turn left onto a small path following
and
. After passing a charming stone cottage, the trail climbs between shrubs and dry stone walls.
Continue straight, passing a final house before entering the woods. Cross a usually dry stream to reach the first junction. Turn right, following signs for Passo Serra. The path now consists of uneven stone steps with some flat sections.
Soon, the trail leaves the woods, offering panoramic views of the Portofino promontory and surrounding valleys. Follow the well-marked stone path to the ridge, where you can also see Val Fontanabuona.
At a fork, take the right-hand uphill path marked by XX and
. After 100 meters, leave the XX markers to follow
back to the ridge.
A steep, exhilarating climb leads to a power pylon, revealing the summit. The final stretch is challenging but manageable with care and some experience. To reach the top, navigate short descents and ascents on rocks equipped with chains. At the summit of Manico del Lume, enjoy a 360-degree view, a cross, and a CAI panel naming the surrounding peaks.
For the return, take the path opposite the cross, initially marked by
and
.
At the fork, follow the "Chignero-direttissima" sign to the right. The
marker is sparse, but ribbons and paint marks guide you down.
The trail descends through forest, then through sections with ferns and brambles, which may be overgrown in warmer months.
Continue down ancient stone stairways that once linked village homes, with some stone ruins still visible.
A few meters past the last restored and inhabited rustic house, you'll rejoin the outbound path above the church of Chignero.
