Start this hike in Uscio, in front of the Church of Sant'Ambrogio. Head left on Via Costa Chiesa, which quickly leads to Via Bisagno. Turn right here to find the trailhead at the start of Via Arnaldi.
The trail is a mule track that climbs through a chestnut forest. After passing a few scattered houses, you'll reach Passo Casetti, marked by a wooden bridge and a small shrine. Cross the bridge and follow the FIE trail markers
. A straightforward 1.7 km walk, avoiding the climb to Monte Tugio, brings you to Passo della Spinarola, where a road from Uscio to Fontanabuona also arrives.
Descend here and take the left trail marked with
towards Passo Serra.
This section faces north, so it's not very sunny. The narrow trail has some tricky parts and can be slippery in winter or wet conditions. Take extra care.
After some ups and downs, you'll reach Passo Serra in just over half an hour.
Ignore the path to Monte Borgo and stay on the coastal trail marked with
. Though narrow, it's flat, easy, and offers stunning views, quickly leading to the pendici di Monte Bello.
Continue following the markers
to reach Passo del Gallo, a lovely area with wooden tables and benches. A few meters further is Pian del Gallo.
Take the leftmost trail that climbs towards Monte Orsena (614 meters). This is a steep 800-meter ascent through the forest. The effort is rewarded with the view at the Sanctuary of Madonna di Caravaggio, accessible only on foot. From here, you can see Rapallo below and the Punta Manara Promontory in Sestri Levante. There are wooden tables and benches for a rest.
Descend the staircase in front of the church to the helicopter landing platform. Turn right and continue down to the Piane di Caravaggio.
From here, retrace your steps and take the right trail marked with
. This flat, easy path leads back to Passo del Gallo after 1.4 km. Retrace your route to the slopes of Montebello, then take the left path, still following the same markers.
This trail is sunnier and offers panoramic views, leading you back to Passo della Spinarola with a pleasant 2.5 km walk.
At Passo della Spinarola, cross the bridge and follow the same trail back to Passo Casetti. Descend Via Arnaldi to return to the church in Uscio, completing this loop between Uscio and Rapallo.
