Loop itinerary in the Aveto Park which, apart from its length, presents no particular technical difficulties, although some critical points should be noted: the first section, despite having FIE trail markers, can be partly difficult to follow due to brambles and fallen trees; the path descending from Lake Giacopiane is initially not very clear due to the lack of signposts.
The starting point is Lago di Malanotte (395 m), reachable via the SS 856 from Carasco into the Val d’Aveto, up to Brizzolara, then taking the left turn after a few bends.
There is also a bus stop nearby connecting Chiavari to the Val d’Aveto.
Leaving the car in a small lay-by, pass the picturesque building that once housed a hotel/restaurant, now abandoned, and continue along the road where the FIE trail marker
is visible, guiding towards La Squazza.
Upon reaching the small group of houses, continue right on the mule track climbing through meadows and then into the woods, with some sections requiring attention due to fallen trees and overgrown brambles.
With occasional views of the ridge and nearby villages, the path reaches the area of Casali, where it meets a dirt road that later becomes paved.
Follow the road to the left, continuing uphill to Stibiveri, where the trail marker leads back onto a mule track on the right, passing a stone house and crossing a partially cleared woodland area with some tricky passages, up to a long stone wall.
Keeping the wall on the left, climb through the most critical section of the hike, where dense brambles make the original path difficult to follow, forcing a short deviation across private land to reach the road at La Squazza (721 m).
From here the route becomes more relaxed: cross the road and take the path beside the only house in the area, climbing through the woods for about 1.6 km to the Cappella del Bozale (965 m).
The small chapel, a useful shelter in bad weather and a possible picnic spot thanks to a table and benches, stands at a junction offering several route options; our route continues to the right, joining Stage 32 of the Alta Via dei Monti Liguri.
From here follow the trail marker
, climbing along the ridge through beech and pine woods, reaching after just over 1 km the southern slopes of Monte Fascia (1134 m). Ignoring the left-hand descent towards Cabanne, continue straight, slightly descending to reach the Passo delle Rocche (or Passo della Bisinella) (1125 m), where the Sentiero della Resistenza intersects.
Continuing along the ridge, climb again through the woods and then cross a more open area with panoramic views, especially beautiful in spring and summer when the meadows are covered in flowers.
After a final stretch through a stony pine forest, pass the junction to Villa Cella and reach the Passo delle Lame, a wide area with the Rifugio Monte degli Abeti, picnic tables, drinking water and the Cappelletta delle Lame.
From here, take the path descending beside the chapel, crossing a meadow before re-entering the pine forest. Follow the direction of Lake Giacopiane along the Anello delle Moglie, marked A7.
The path winds gently through varied environments: shaded woods, panoramic ridges with views reaching the sea, and open clearings.
After a small rise, begin the descent across grassy slopes often populated by grazing horses and cows, reaching a wide dirt road.
Follow the road to the right to reach Lago di Giacopiane (1015 m), a reservoir set in a beautiful natural setting.
There is a picnic area here.
Walk along the lakeshore for about 1.2 km, past the parking area, until you find a path descending on the right.
This initial section, when we walked it (April 2026), was poorly marked due to the lack of trail signs
and fallen park signposts, so having the GPX track is highly recommended.
Once in the woods, the path becomes clearer and descends without difficulty among chestnut trees, with one slightly exposed section requiring care, especially when wet.
The trail continues over stones and rocks, becoming an old stepped path near the end.
Back on dirt ground, it crosses the final wooded section before reaching a dirt road that becomes paved, leading to Montemozzo.
Follow the road and the trail marker
to the last houses, where a path descends to Temossi (620 m).
Reach the road and follow it to the church of Santa Maria Assunta, where the trail resumes, descending through the woods to Campori.
Cross the road and take the path opposite, descending to Via Campori, where the route is not very clear; keep left and cross the meadow to reach the road again.
Cross and descend once more to the asphalt, follow it briefly, then take the final shortcut to Via Malanotte, returning to the starting point.
