A circular itinerary in the Val Petronio starting from Casarza Ligure, in the hinterland of Sestri Levante, reaching the coastal village of Moneglia via the summit of Monte Moneglia.
It is recommended to undertake this itinerary, suitable all year round, with an adequate supply of water, as only in Moneglia it is possible to refill.

From the Sestri Levante motorway exit, follow the SS 523 for 4 kilometers to reach Casarza Ligure, where parking is easily available on the right bank of the Petronio stream, the starting point of the hike.

The signs lead you to follow Via Novano, a street that enters the village and is followed until you find, on the left, further signs for San Rocco/Monte Moneglia.
You pass between houses and then continue on a path that, skirting some vegetable gardens, leads under the motorway viaduct.

The path now climbs steeply through Mediterranean scrub, with some slippery sections when wet, until reaching the road in the locality of Macallè, where houses overlook the sea of Riva Trigoso.

Following the uphill road, you reach the Via Aurelia, which you follow to the left for a few meters, cross it, and take the well-marked path of the REL (Ligurian Hiking Network).

The ascent continues, guided by the trail marker Rombi, through a holm oak forest, reaching a fork in front of a gate where you must take the left path and continue climbing to a second gate which, despite the “private property” sign, allows passage through a small opening on the left.

The dirt road soon becomes a steep path with switchbacks, surrounded by strawberry trees and low shrubs, offering increasingly spectacular views of the sea and Riva Trigoso.

You reach the pass once known as Barcacima (423 m), now called Colle San Rocco, after the small church visible near the antennas and easily seen from both Sestri Levante and Riva Trigoso.

Behind the chapel, a pleasant rest area has been created with wooden tables and benches, partly shaded.

You continue almost flat with slight elevation changes, surrounded by Mediterranean vegetation before entering a holm oak forest where remains of a WWII barracks are visible.

With a gentle descent, you reach a fork where you stay on the main path marked FIE Rombi to reach the summit of Monte Moneglia (521 m), from which you can continue in two directions.

Our route continues downhill following XX, after a stop at the picnic area just below the summit overlooking the coast.

The path, after an initial descent ignoring a right turn, winds through shrubs, continues flat, then descends again to another junction, where you follow XX to bypass Monte Comunaglia and descend to Monte Comuneglia (435 m).

The descent becomes steep on rocky terrain, requiring attention when wet, with stunning views over the sea and Moneglia.
At Servaghi (300 m), follow signs for Case Venino/Moneglia down to the SVA (Sentiero Verde-Azzurro).

The final stretch leads onto a road crossing the hamlet of Venino and descending past Monleone Castle into Moneglia.

In Moneglia, even outside summer, some services remain open.

For the return, follow Via Craveri toward the station, then take a short detour to visit the restored “Treuggi” public washhouses.

After crossing under the railway, climb a concrete staircase following 2 + blu to Crovetta, then continue through woodland.

After about 3 km, reach Crova, then Via Aurelia and continue to Ca’ Bianca.

Follow Rombi vuoti toward Casarza Ligure - Muntà dei Povei.

The Muntà dei Povei is an ancient path once used by pilgrims heading to Tuscany.

The trail alternates forest and scrub and reaches Casarza Ligure after about 2 hours from Moneglia.
