A hiking excursion in the Val Petronio that combines the ascent to the panoramic Monte Tregin with the visit to typical villages of the Ligurian hinterland, crossing diverse environments.

The starting point is Bargone, which can be reached from the Sestri Levante highway exit by following SS 523 to Casarza Ligure and then turning left onto Via Bargone.
In the village square there are a few parking spaces, a drinking water tap (another one can be found in Tassani, so it’s recommended to fill up here), and a panel with all the trail markers and directions for continuing on foot in various directions.

Our route follows the FIE trail marker X which points left onto Via delle Fragole, a small paved road that passes the last houses of Bargone and then continues left, beginning to climb along a mule track surrounded by cultivated fields.
The first stop on the route, Monte Tregin, towers above the village.

Soon you enter a chestnut forest, passing through a more humid area where you easily cross the Rio Figallo, before continuing on a trail now surrounded by pines and sparse Mediterranean scrub that allows you to admire the surrounding landscape.
The path climbs for about a kilometer, with a few steeper sections, until reaching the Sella dell’Incisa, a junction point for several trails.

To reach the summit, continue to the right, still guided by the same trail marker X, following the track that, after passing through a small grove, continues over rocky terrain with a distinctive reddish color due to the presence of jasper, the sedimentary rock that characterizes Monte Tregin.

The climb, although requiring caution, is not particularly difficult and invites brief stops to admire the scenery behind you, a preview of the view you can enjoy from the summit, which is reached with one final short push.

Monte Treggin (870 m), crowned with the inevitable cross, is surrounded by one of the most scenic landscapes of the Ligurian Apennines, with a broad view over the Gulf of Tigullio, stretching as far as Corsica on clear days, and the Graveglia and Aveto Valleys, with their main peaks.
Needless to say, it’s the perfect spot for a lunch break.

To descend from the mountain, follow the same trail back to the Sella dell’Incisa, where this time you continue straight, following the trail marker Empty square.
The path enters the woods briefly before continuing on a narrow trail that, mostly flat and in a more open environment, skirts around Monte Incisa and later Monte Bomba.

This part of the route is very pleasant and varied, alternating between open, panoramic stretches and passages through a beautiful chestnut forest where you can still see the ruins of ancient stone structures.

As you descend toward Tassani, the terrain becomes more rocky and arid, with only a few scattered trees. Upon reaching a junction, keep left to follow the path that passes through cultivated fields and leads to Tassani, a small hamlet of Sestri Levante clustered around the Church of Sant’ Anna.
Here you’ll find a drinking water tap.

After passing the Acli club headquarters, in front of the parish church, our route follows the SP 44 for one kilometer to visit another small village in the Val Gromolo: Cardini.
The trail to return to Bargone can be found just past the church, on the left, shortly before entering the heart of the village.

This is a wide dirt road surrounded by lush vegetation, which with a gentle uphill stretch and some short climbs, reaches the Poggio Fontanin junction in about 45 minutes.
Here, turn left and take the narrow path that in about 20 minutes, passing through Campo Albaro, leads back to Bargone, thus completing the loop.
