A circular itinerary leading to the Sanctuary of Caravaggio from Rapallo, more precisely from the hamlet of Santa Maria del Campo, which can be reached by bus from the railway station.

The starting point is Via San Tomaso, around 700 metres from the motorway exit, where an information panel with trail directions has been installed.
It is strongly recommended to start with an adequate supply of water, as there are no fountains or drinking water points along the route.

Following the signs, the route takes the paved road on the left for about 300 metres until reaching, on the left-hand side, a stone staircase leading to the Ruins of San Tomaso (12th century). Continuing beyond the site, the path crosses the bridge over the motorway before turning right and joining the old mule track climbing between rural houses and cultivated terraces.

As the trail climbs, it crosses the paved road in several places. Continue straight ahead following the trail marker trail marker, until reaching the locality of Spotà, where a gate marks the boundary of a private property.
A well-maintained staircase on the left passes elegant villas with gardens before reaching the final paved section. The route then continues along a steep staircase made of narrow and irregular steps entering the woodland and arriving at a crossroads:

  • continuing flat to the right (around 100 metres) leads to the Cross of Spotà, where, besides the war memorial erected in 1935, there is also a picnic area with wooden tables and benches.
  • to the left the trail climbs towards the Sanctuary.

After the short detour, return to the main trail and keep left towards the Sanctuary.

As the ascent continues, the route becomes less steep and offers beautiful views over the valley ahead. A final gently sloping section surrounded by shrubs leads to the helicopter landing platform.

With one last effort, climb the 136 steps leading to the summit of Monte Orsena (615 m), where the Sanctuary of Caravaggio stands surrounded by magnificent panoramic views.
There are several picnic tables here, while slightly below stands an unattended mountain shelter.

For the return route, head back to the platform but this time keep right, following a wide and comfortable stone-and-concrete path marked with 3 red dots
At the junction in the locality of Piane di Caravaggio, continue left (to the right the trail descends towards Recco), now following the trail marker 2 empty circles. After an initial flat section passing beside a small hut used as a shelter, the trail reaches a wide meadow, a popular picnic destination.

At this point the traditional trail is left behind (it continues straight ahead and remains clearly visible) in favour of a slightly longer but far more panoramic route leading to Monte Ampola (573 m). The ascent follows a narrow path surrounded by dense vegetation until reaching the summit, where besides a transmission repeater there is also a remarkable panoramic view over the entire valley. Following the ridge, the route descends along a fairly steep dirt-and-stone trail immersed in the scent of wild thyme, with panoramic views over Rapallo on one side and Recco and Genoa on the other.
Near a wild boar hunting post, the alternative route rejoins the traditional trail before reaching a junction at Pian di Cren, where the route continues straight ahead.

After crossing another open area at Colle Esoli, the trail descends through shaded woodland along a series of stone steps, passing another panoramic viewpoint before reaching a meadow which, during spring, becomes covered with primroses and violets.
The descent continues first through woodland and then, approaching the houses, between terraced fields and dry-stone walls before ending on Via Caravaggio, near the Ancient Church of Ruta di Camogli.

Continue for around 200 metres along the paved road to the left until spotting the trail marker connection trail, indicating a path running above the road beside several houses before entering the woodland once again.
The trail returns close to the paved road, crossing a residential area before continuing flat beneath the Fons Gemina, a unique structure where water flows from two twin springs surrounded by a peaceful rural setting.

Continuing along Via della Fonte, the pedestrian lane running parallel to the road, the route soon reaches the Church of San Martino di Noceto, a small hamlet of Rapallo.
From the church the trail climbs gently before continuing right, now following the trail marker dotted circle, along Via del Seggio, a mostly level path leading onto Salita Caravaggio, initially rough but improving near the houses before becoming paved in the final section. Continuing downhill reaches the provincial road, which is followed briefly to the left until a shortcut descending through the woodland appears beside a house. This path ends on Via Cavagino, the road descending towards the Parish Church of Santa Maria del Campo, thus completing the loop.
The bus stop is located here.
