A short but rewarding loop starting from Cavi di Lavagna, a small seaside village that can easily be reached by train, which is highly recommended due to the limited parking available, especially during the summer months.
The route is not recommended on particularly hot and sunny days.
The starting point is Piazza Nazario Sauro. Following a small street towards the east, you reach Via Sant'Anna, where the trail begins and is marked by an information panel.
The trail markers to follow are
and
, although the route is very straightforward.
A staircase climbs through the last houses of the village before continuing on a dirt track, partly shaded, and reaching a paved road which should be followed uphill to the left for about one hundred metres before rejoining the trail.
The most scenic section of the hike begins along the Ancient Roman Road: the dirt path, surrounded by Mediterranean scrub, runs high above the sea and offers magnificent views over the Bay of Sestri Levante.
Within a few minutes, the ruins of the Church of Sant'Anna come into view and, together with the wide panorama over the Gulf of Tigullio, make this a truly unforgettable place.
Beyond the ruins, the trail reaches a junction equipped with a table and benches, where you should continue left on the uphill path.
Leaving the sea behind, the route climbs quite steeply over rocky terrain through a dry and sunny area.
After a flatter section surrounded by vegetation, the trail reaches a fork. Continue left, following the "Anello delle Mimose", a route shared with mountain bikes and particularly beautiful during the first months of the year when the mimosa trees are in bloom.
Initially, the dirt trail runs gently through the woods before continuing through lower and more open vegetation, offering splendid views from above over Sestri Levante and the sea.
As the descent begins, attention should be paid to passing cyclists, as the trail becomes narrow and rocky.
As you descend, the path seems to plunge directly into the sea and the scenery becomes increasingly spectacular.
When the trail bends left, it becomes flatter and the landscape changes, opening onto the hills and green peaks surrounding Sestri Levante.
After crossing a section of denser Mediterranean vegetation, the trail reaches Via Privata Lombardia near the Sports Centre of Sestri Levante.
Follow the road past the school until reaching Via Romana Occidentale, which runs parallel to the railway line. Turn right and continue to the end of the road until reaching the campsite, where the climb to the Rocche di Sant'Anna begins.
There are two ways up from here. Our route continues to the right, following the trail marker
, a slightly longer but gentler alternative.
This is the "Bridge Trail", named after the five bridges crossing the Fico Stream, now partly hidden by vegetation. Climbing steadily over rocky terrain and accompanied by beautiful views, the trail reaches the Rocche di Sant'Anna in about 15 minutes.
From here, following the same route as on the outward journey, you return to the starting point in Cavi Borgo.
