A loop hike on the hills above Rapallo, following ancient paths that once connected the rural hamlets of the area and leading to the summit of Monte Pegge, a spectacular panoramic viewpoint where the Rifugio Margherita stands.

The starting point is San Quirico di Assereto, which can be reached from the motorway area by following Via Puchoz and then Via al Castellino.
A small parking area below the church offers space for a few cars and scooters.

A concrete staircase leads up to the road heading towards the church. Follow it for a few metres until, on the left, you find the trail marked with 3 dots, which enters the woods. Climbing steadily, the route crosses a private road before continuing in the shade of the forest to reach Pian dei Merli, a small clearing with the remains of an old rural building.

Here the trail joins the route coming from the centre of Rapallo. Turn left and continue until reaching a junction where, following the trail marker red circle with bar, the route continues left.

After an initial level section, the trail begins a gentle climb through the forest, offering occasional views through the trees of the small hamlet of Montepegli. A more open stretch follows, where a rocky outcrop provides an excellent excuse for a short stop and a beautiful panoramic view over Rapallo.

A final steep climb leads directly to the Rifugio Margherita (774 m), the unstaffed mountain hut on Monte Pegge, offering magnificent views over the Golfo del Tigullio.

Following the trail marker red diamond, descend the long stone staircase which, surrounded by scenery of remarkable beauty, quickly loses elevation and reaches Passo della Crocetta (599 m) after approximately 700 metres. This mountain pass marks the boundary between Rapallo and Coreglia Ligure in the Val Fontanabuona.

Follow the paved road to the right for about 200 metres before taking a concrete stairway passing beside a house and entering the forest. The route descends through woodland, passing a few scattered houses before reaching another road.

Cross the provincial road and continue on the mule track opposite, which descends through the forest and, after about 400 metres, reaches the rear of the Monastery of the Discalced Carmelites. Following the fence surrounding the large property, the trail eventually ends on the road.

Cross in front of the monastery and take the shortcut descending towards San Maurizio dei Monti. Instead of following the main road, take the lane on the right leading to Case di Noè, an ancient hamlet made up of a few houses surrounded by vegetable gardens, orchards and a small chapel.

Cross the peaceful rural hamlet and climb right, passing the last farmhouses before continuing across terraced fields. After crossing a small stream, pay attention to a sign on the right indicating Passo San Quirico - Pian dei Merli.

Climb the stone steps running alongside a stone building and enter the forest, continuing uphill by following red circle local trail marker, an unofficial but constantly present trail marker that is essential for staying on the route.

After a short rocky section, the trail continues climbing through the woods until reaching the "Muntà degli Angeli" (Angels' Climb), an ancient and steep stone staircase, now partly deteriorated, which once connected Case di Noè with San Quirico d'Assereto and Montepegli.

A final series of switchbacks leads to Passo di San Quirico on the Rapallo–Monte Pegge route.
From here, following the same trail used on the ascent through Pian dei Merli, the route returns to San Quirico d’Assereto.
