This trail to Manico del Lume offers a unique ascent via ancient paths and panoramic routes. It's suited for experienced hikers only, due to rocky sections and a stretch on an unofficial, volunteer-restored trail. Avoid it when wet, as it becomes slippery.

Start at Chignero, a small hamlet in Rapallo with a few scattered houses and a church. Reachable by bus or car (limited parking) in about 10 minutes from the highway exit. Take Via San Pietro, then left at the junction towards Foggia, and continue uphill.

With the church on your right, start climbing the paved road for a few meters, then switch to the mule track on the left, marked by Linea rossa. Near an old stone house, the trail veers right off the main path. Pass some houses, enter the woods, and ascend on rocky, uneven ground. Soon, you'll reach an open area leading to a scenic spot known as "the bench," offering views over Rapallo.

Three trails meet here; continue straight on the recently cleared ancient path, which lacks markers. Initially, the path is clear and straight. As you ascend, look for red ribbons and arrows for guidance. After about 30 minutes, arrive at Sereu, a small hill with rocks. Follow signs carefully as you head towards the ridge. Descending right leads to "scoglio dell'orologio" and down to Montepegli.

The climb becomes steep through low Mediterranean scrub and heather. Once on the ridge, turn left, following the FIE trail sign rombo rosso. The path climbs initially, then levels out with views of Rapallo and the Portofino Promontory. Continue over rocks to a fork. For the summit of Manico del Lume, tackle a final steep ascent in 15 minutes to reach the cross and enjoy the view. On a clear day, it's an ideal lunch spot.

Retrace your steps back to the fork, then continue straight, following the trail marker Linea rossa. The descent offers stunning views of sea and mountains but demands caution. Be prepared for rocky ups and downs, a chain-assisted section, and an exposed stretch. Wet conditions make the rock slabs slippery. The descent also includes wooded sections.

Back at the bench, turn right and follow your ascent path to return to the church of Chignero.
